THE FIRST TIME I SAW A FARMER THROW AWAY WHAT ANOTHER FARMER WAS BUYING

THE FIRST TIME I SAW A FARMER THROW AWAY WHAT ANOTHER FARMER WAS BUYING

The smell hit me before I even entered the farm.

Fresh poultry manure.

A farmer was clearing his pen, loading bags of manure and telling his worker:

“Take this thing far away. It's useless.”

I asked him, “You don't use it?”

He laughed.

“Use it for what?”

That same afternoon, another farmer came looking for organic material for his crop field.

He was willing to pay for properly handled poultry manure.

That was a good reminder:

One person's waste can become another person's farm input—but only when it's handled properly.

Poultry manure contains nutrients and organic matter that can contribute to soil fertility. But fresh manure isn't something you should simply dump directly around every crop.

BEFORE USING POULTRY MANURE ON YOUR FARM

1. KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE

Manure composition varies depending on the birds, feed, bedding and storage method.

Don't assume every bag has exactly the same nutrient content.

2. COMPOST OR OTHERWISE PROPERLY PROCESS IT

Proper composting can help stabilize manure and reduce some risks associated with fresh manure.

A well-managed compost pile needs appropriate moisture, aeration and temperature.

Don't just put manure in a heap and forget it.

3. DON'T APPLY RANDOM QUANTITIES

More manure doesn't automatically mean more yield.

Excess nutrients can create problems, including nutrient imbalance and environmental contamination.

For serious crop production, soil testing is one of the smartest investments you can make.

4. CONSIDER WHAT YOU'RE GROWING

The appropriate manure-management approach depends on the crop, soil, climate and production system.

A vegetable farmer and a maize farmer shouldn't necessarily use exactly the same application strategy.

5. THINK ABOUT FOOD SAFETY

If you're growing crops that will be eaten fresh, manure management deserves extra attention.

Follow appropriate local agricultural and food-safety guidance, especially regarding application timing and compost maturity.

AND THERE'S A BUSINESS LESSON HERE

Don't look at farm waste only as something to remove.

Look at your farm and ask:

What am I throwing away every week that someone else could use?

Poultry manure.

Crop residues.

Certain processing by-products.

Used growing media.

Organic waste.

Some can become compost or soil amendments.

Some can become animal-feed inputs after proper processing and safety checks.

Some can become raw materials for other agricultural enterprises.

But don't make the mistake of assuming that every waste material is automatically safe or valuable.

Test it.

Process it properly.

Understand the market.

Then calculate whether collecting, processing, packaging and transporting it actually makes economic sense.

As we say in Nigeria, “The person carrying firewood knows where the shoe pinches.”

Agriculture rewards people who pay attention to the details.

If you're serious about learning how agricultural waste, alternative farming systems and practical farm businesses can be approached, keep following Farming Tech & Business.
